Changing lives one borehole (water well) at a time

We dream of a world where everyone has access to clean water, nutritious food, and dignified work. That’s why we’re working with rural communities in the Rufunsa District of Southern Zambia on five things: W A S H, Farming God’s Way, Trade and Construction Skills, and Village Banking.
Shedding the constraints of neo-colonialism, we have a renewed mind and a new model: " For Zambians, by Zambians."
Ask us about it! We love to talk about it!
Access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) is a critical factor in reducing poverty in Zambia. For adults, the availability of these basic services can significantly impact their economic productivity. Time that would otherwise be spent on water collection or dealing with illnesses due to poor sanitation can be redirected toward income-generating activities. Additionally, the financial burden of healthcare expenses related to waterborne diseases can be alleviated, preventing families from falling deeper into poverty.
For children, access to WASH is crucial for their overall development. Water-related diseases often result in absenteeism from school, hindering their educational progress. Moreover, the lack of proper sanitation facilities in schools can discourage attendance, particularly among girls, further impacting their education.
Farming God’s Way training provides farmers with knowledge of sustainable farming practices that maximize crop yields while minimizing negative impacts on the ecosystem. By adopting these techniques, farmers can increase their productivity and generate more income from their crops. This initiative also promotes environmental sustainability by reducing the use of harmful chemicals and preserving soil fertility.
Trades Skill training programs equip individuals with valuable skills in welding and metal fabrication, carpentry, and garment production. This initiative aims to empower community members, particularly women, by providing them with opportunities for income generation and self-sufficiency.
By generating income through sewing, women can contribute to their households’ financial stability and support their children’s education. By teaching village men better construction skills, they can improve their households as well as contribute to the betterment of the village at large.
Village Banking is a vital service for the people of Kakupwe and the surrounding villages. By joining a village bank, members can access loans, savings, and training that help them improve their living conditions and income. Village banking enables the residents to participate in these programs and benefit from the opportunities they offer. Village banking is a key strategy to empower Kakupwe and promote its social and economic development.
BLF has implemented a Women’s Empowerment Cooperative which has equipped 60 women with financial literacy and entrepreneurship skills. These women are not only empowered with knowledge but also provided with loans for business startup capital.
This support jump-starts their businesses, enabling them to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams and increase their income.
By utilizing the Village Bank in coordination with our empowerment projects, we emphasize the financial stewardship element of the moving out of poverty.
This is why we do what we do for the folks of Kakupwe, Mpokota, Kacha, Mwendabuseka and Mulofwa Villages in the Rufunsa District in Southern Zambia.
